Toptex as a Protective Cover for silage and roughage — a promising application

Bird pecking in plastic silage bags is a well-known problem for many farmers. When birds peck holes in the plastic, oxygen can seep in, which degrades the silage and, in the worst case, results in large amounts of feed being wasted.
To reduce this risk, we have tested using Toptex as a Protective Cover over the plastic tubing. The results so far have been very promising.

Extra protection against bird damage

Placing Toptex on top of the plastic tubing creates an extra protective layer that makes it harder for birds to access the plastic. Less damage to the plastic means better conditions for keeping oxygen out and maintaining high-quality feed.

Unroll the tarp over the plastic tubing so that it covers the top and extends slightly down the sides. Then secure it along the edges using, for example, car tires, sandbags, or other suitable weights, so that it remains stable even in windy conditions.

To keep the tablecloth securely in place, durable Velcro straps are used that can withstand loads of over 100 kg, making installation both easy and stable.

That’s why Toptex is the right choice

The 6 × 50-meter variant is particularly well-suited for this application.

Toptex is made of 100% polypropylene, a material that is fully recyclable and designed to withstand harsh outdoor environments. Under normal European conditions, the fabric has an estimated life span of 3–5 years, and if stored away from UV radiation when not in use, it can last even longer.

Still under evaluation

This application is still in the testing phase. The results we have seen so far are very positive, and we are continuing to evaluate the solution to gain more experience.
